Joachim
In Germany, Signal, the International Nazi Propaganda magazine, began publishing in April, 1940, and gave the German people photographs of men at war and graphics showing arrows of occupation. Propaganda extolled the virtues and amplified the successes of the German military, giving the people at home visual proof of the victories they should celebrate. The conquest of Poland had been, as planned, a quick and decisive “blitzkrieg” and while the subsequent months appeared to be a quiet “sitting war,” Hitler had continued moving across the board of Europe, attacking neutral Denmark and Norway to secure the route that the iron ore from Sweden had to take to support the Third Reich.
By the end of May, with the Low Countries and Norway occupied, Germany could turn its attention to Britain. The goal was to sufficiently weaken the Royal Air Force and coastal shipping to make the planned invasion by land (“Operation Sea Lion”) feasible.
Beginning on July 10, Joachim was one of the hundreds of fighters and bombers screaming over the Channel and the coast of England. Joachim, who had been promoted from Second Lieutenant to First Lieutenant for exceptional achievements, circled London, battered defending pilots on the coast, and harried ships, adding fifteen planes to his list of victories over Dover, Margate, Folkestone, Ashford, Braintree, Goodhurst, Maidstone, Faversham, and Marden. By August, the Luftwaffe had stepped up their attacks, sending a thousand planes a day over the channel. Joachim and JG 26 flew every day, relentlessly pummeling the RAF, and cratering the airfields. The strategy nearly worked.
